The
SKOKS' - Family of Kayakers
How did
it all begin . . . ? In fact it did start under the Skok's
pear tree . . .
It really started far back in 1960's when father Janko Skok
gave some local kayakers permission to leave their boats under
the pear tree on his property adjacent to the River Sava.
Soon after this event the Skok children were busy watching
the development of the sport almost in their front yard. These
goings on first attracted Skok's senior boy Dusan, who slowly
but surely dragged the rest of the family children into it.
And so brothers Miran and Janez and sister Marjeta followed.
Successful Competitors
During the years of kayaking involvement the Skok children
- all of them - became a very successful and competitive force
in kayaking on the white waters. They were gaining in reputation
as their prowess in sport exceeded the local national borders
and they became the force well recognized in the international
arena. The youngest of the boys Janez lasted the longest in
the competitive sport. He was persistently and constantly
in the world elite, having repeated successes in gaining top
results in the world cup competitions, world championships
and the Olympic games. In 1993 he decided to conclude his
competitive career.
The end of competition and the beginning
of SKOK SPORT CENTRE
After the completion of successful careers in kayaking, the
Skok's did not leave the sport they love. They decided, that
the sport had given them plenty and that they can give something
back to the sport, by passing on the knowledge of the sport
and kayaking activity, as well as show to the others the beauty
of the waters and the attractiveness of that sport.
As the coaches they spent their time coaching
juniors in the local kayaking club however they decided to
present the sport and its activity to a greater public. For
the people, who were keen to try the waters and rapids on
the local scene at River Sava, they started organizing varied
rafting events. For more interested people, who wanted a far
greater and more often occasions spent on water and doing
it their own wa,y they started a kayaking school.
And where we are today, after the
first 14 years?
Throughout the last decade and more SKOK SPORT kept on growing.
The old family site has been improved and redeveloped into
a very functional sport centre. The growth in the independent
new Slovene democracy, resulted also in the renewed interest
in the sport of kayaking. The growth in interest was countered
with the growth in programs SKOK SPORT which are now able
to offer. The decade of experience gained in working with
groups of all sizes and standards, resulted in even better
products being offered to the public eager to take to the
water in rafts and kayaks. SKOK SPORT can proudly claim to
be the front runner with organized rafting programs,
with very successful kayak school; with a
wide variety of kayak trips on Slovene Rivers
as well as on the rivers outside Slovenia. The heart of SKOK
SPORT is SKOK SPORT CENTRE located at Tacen on River Sava
in the suburb of the City of Ljubljana. The SKOK SPORT CENTRE
is adjacent to the National Kayak and Canoeing venue on River
Sava.
